And we want to make that happen for free, because we believe in our users and their needs.
It’s going to be built on a next-generation platform which is already being used by over 100,000 people across the globe: Stony Brook Housing Portal. It’s an almost entirely open-source project with contributions from developers all around the world and hundreds of thousands of users who use it every day.

Stony Brook is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is the county seat of Suffolk County and the main commercial, financial and industrial center for western Long Island. In 2010, the population was 37,511. The town is known for its “unique” housing options such as Tudor-style (English Tudor style) homes with great views at affordable prices.
Alderman Tom Hester is helping to lead the push to save money by providing stony brook public housing tenants with access to new construction homes built on his own property.
The project will eventually include four single story houses on the site that are being owned by a developer in neighboring Riverhead. The developers had planned a five-story building but were unable to bring it through because of restrictions set forth by Suffolk County government.
The first project opened in January 2014 on 25 acres of land adjacent to Alderman Tom Hester’s property in Riverhead. Each house will include four bedrooms and three bathrooms; one-and-a-half baths; open kitchen/dining areas; laundry rooms; and an attached garage with three car parking spaces (at no cost to taxpayers). Each home will cost between $100,000 and $200,000 excluding all local taxes and utilities. Alderman Hester’s estate is paying for all construction costs related to the project.
The houses are slated for completion in late 2013 or early 2014 when rent increases should be less than 3 percent per year (a “soft” increase from what rents have been increasing in recent years).

stony brook housing portal is a crowdsourced housing resource that provides some of the most affordable housing in the country. The idea is to get more people off the street and into homes, where they can also find jobs and opportunities.
It started as a way for low-income people to help themselves, but it quickly developed into an opportunity for people to help other people too.
In the past four years, thousands of homeless people have been able to find permanent housing thanks to the site. It has helped them take charge of their lives and give them new purpose.
Through this platform, stony brook housing portal has helped many homeless veterans get off the streets and into homes after returning home from Iraq or Afghanistan. This is just one example that demonstrates how stony brook helps empower marginalized communities.

Stony Brook Housing Portal is a housing portal (not a real estate) that makes it easy for people to find affordable housing in the Stony Brook area. The site has many features including a search engine, a map, Neighborhood Search, and price search. It’s open to anyone in the Stony Brook area and you can apply for a rental or an apartment. As of this writing, it’s free to sign up.
This is not quite what we dreamed up when we started out, but it’s better than nothing. We are probably going to end up with something like this; but we don’t have any particular plans yet (other than an initial phase of testing it in one market and then exploring all possibilities). I think this is definitely what’s needed right now as there is no obvious improvement on current options (though hopefully there will be over time).

Stony Brook has some of the most beautiful housing in the world and it deserves to be on Airbnb’s list of top housing markets. It is also one of the most expensive housing markets in the US. This is partly because you have to make a big investment upfront, but mostly because the people who live there are extremely rich and don’t have any desire for anything other than privacy and luxury.
It isn’t enough for your product or service to solve a problem that exists in any market; you need to understand how people experience it before making a decision on whether or not they would want your product or service.
To get at this knowledge we need to begin with a good first-hand experience from someone who has experienced it personally. I did this when I was interviewing candidates at Startup School (a month-long program designed by Startup School alumni) and I came across an interesting story about how he lost his fortune during one of his first corporate jobs — he was fired as CEO of an Fortune 500 company just before the stock market crashed in 1929! The lesson here: don’t make decisions based on speculation!
